Everything You Need to Know About Recovering Your VAT: Your Top 3 Questions Answered

At Ask for Tax Free we’re passionate about making VAT refunds as simple and stress-free as possible. If you’ve ever claimed your VAT back with us, you already know how much we love helping our clients. Today, we’re answering the three most common questions we receive—so you can get your refund quickly and easily!

1. What Is the Minimum Amount Required to Recover VAT?

To qualify for a VAT refund, you need to make a minimum purchase of 175 euros (or 871 Lei)—and this amount must appear on a single invoice. Unfortunately, you can’t combine multiple invoices to reach the threshold.

When you make your qualifying purchase, the store will provide you with three essential documents:

  • VAT refund form

  • Invoice

  • Receipt

Keep these safe! You’ll need all three, with the VAT refund form stamped by customs, when you leave the EU—within 90 days of your purchase.

2. Where Can You Recover Your VAT?

Once you have the customs stamp on your documents, you have four convenient options for getting your VAT refund:

1. Otopeni Airport:
After you pass through ticket and passport control, you’ll find our desk in the Non-Schengen area. Visit us there to receive your VAT refund on the spot!

2. Our Bucharest Office:
Prefer a face-to-face experience? Visit our office in Bucharest (full address on our website) and get your refund in cash.

3. Siret Customs:
If you’re traveling via Siret, simply bring your stamped documents to the customs office to process your refund.

4. By Post:
Already back home? No problem! Mail us your documents, and we’ll transfer your refund directly to your bank account.

3. What Documents Do You Need to Get Your VAT Back?

To claim your VAT refund in cash, just bring:

  • The three original documents (VAT refund form with customs stamp, invoice, and receipt)

  • Your passport

If you can’t visit us in person, simply send your documents by post or courier. Here’s what you’ll need to include:

  • The original VAT refund form (with customs stamp)

  • Copies of the invoice and receipt

  • Your IBAN, written in the designated section of the VAT refund form

Once we receive everything, we’ll process your refund and transfer the money straight to your bank account.
